Assistant Secretary Babauta Makes First Official Trip to the FSM.US Embassy Media Release #35-2010, August 5, 2010 - On July 26-31, U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) Assistant Secretary for Insular Areas Anthony M. Babauta visited the FSM to review progress under the Amended Compact and to view various Compact-funded infrastructure projects. The six-day official visit included stops in Pohnpei and Chuuk States. This was Babauta’s first visit to the FSM since being confirmed by the U.S. Senate in September 2009. .

Washington, DC (May 14, 2010) – Interior’s Assistant Secretary for Insular Areas Tony Babauta and the Office of Insular Affairs’ U.S. Virgin Islands desk officer Basil Ottley hosted two days of meetings at the U.S. Department of the Interior for a team from the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority (VIWAPA) led by Executive Director Hugo Hodge and a team from the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) led by Roberto Gorbea of the Board of Managers and General Manager Juan A. Perez Lopez to consider an underwater connection between the power grids in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The meetings considered how such a connection might also affect the Caribbean region, other insular areas as well as federal stakeholders.

U.S. Embassy Media Release No. 16-2009 (May 12, 2010) - On May 11, the remains of the late U.S. Army Sergeant Raymond J. Hicks, 26, arrived at Pohnpei International Airport on Continental flight 957. Sgt. Hicks died on April 24 in Sierra Vista, Arizona from non-combat related injuries.

On May 1, twenty-six year old Eric M. Finniginam, a U.S. Army specialist from Yap, Federated States of Micronesia became the latest war casualty from the region. Specialist Finniginam died of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit in Afghanistan's eastern Kunar province, according to the Department of Defense.

Washington, DC (May 6, 2010) – On April 27-30, the Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs (OIA), in coordination with the East-West Center, held a high-level planning workshop in Honolulu for utility managers, financial officers and top elected officials from the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau to address one of the most serious economic issues facing each: the worsening financial condition of island power and water utilities. The workshop brought together thirty-five managers and financial officers from the utilities and leaders from the executive and legislative branches from the Marshalls, Palau, Kosrae, Pohnpei, Chuuk and Yap throughout the Freely Associated States.

Washington, D.C. (April 14, 2010) – Demonstrating his continued commitment to the US insular areas, President Obama signed an Executive Order that reestablishes the White House as Co-Chair of the Interagency Group on Insular Areas (IGIA).
“We plan to use the Interagency Group as the means for extensive consultation with the island Governors and Members of Congress to coordinate significant decisions, and to advocate a collaborative approach to the Federal Government’s responsibilities to insular areas,” Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar said.
