Beginning October 1, 1998, the National Business Center’s Training and Development Services became the Department of the Interior University. The DOI University will become fully operational during Fiscal Year 1999.

The mission of the DOI University is to provide a Department-wide framework for training, education, and development of Interior’s employees to meet the Department’s goals. The DOI University will enable the Bureaus and Offices to collaborate and coordinate the use of learning resources, and apply leading-edge education strategies and technologies.

The DOI University will provide accessible learning opportunities that help employees advance in their careers, an easier way to obtain and apply training resources, and improved productivity and customer satisfaction. These improvements will be accomplished by pooling resources to take advantage of price discounts; keeping employees better informed of strategic training initiatives; better coordinating information on training sources throughout the Department; better using technology to coordinate, share, and enhance training resources; and strengthening partnerships with schools and the private sector.

A DOI University Advisory Board will be established to ensure that the needs and concerns of all Bureaus and Offices are taken into consideration. This Board, a diverse group of representatives from throughout the Department, will provide broad guidance to the DOI University. The focus of the DOI University will be to reduce costs and add value by increasing inter-Bureau collaboration and cooperation. It is hoped that through the DOI University, a positive change will occur in the Department’s approach to providing for the learning needs of its employees. Employees will have a greater opportunity for education and training.
